The last good day of Autumn? Of 2012? The weather’s going to take a dive here in the next few hours and the leaves will explode and the world will go quiet with the onset of grey. Until then though, sweaters off and squint into the glare that beats through the haze as you enjoy a bright and joyous day at Central Park. I took my sketching buddy and emotional support, Sharon Denning with me and we knocked out some work.
Park technicians were busy with chainsaws on the south side of the park, so it was pretty much back to my island today for two studies. The first took forever, probably because Sharon and I spend so much time chatting. Again, my focus here is on the underbrush and how much that defines things. The water isn’t an embarrassment in this pic. There was a brief moment of panic when i went for a broad stroke on the upper-left thicket and the trunks began to bleed all over the place. Everything settled nicely…
Not certain of how much time I had with Sharon and upset that i was being so precious with the first one, the next sketch was solely with my brushpen and i tried to block things in quickly and then see if i could pull detail from that. A significant difference between the two studies…
Here’s what my and Sharon’s work looks like in the field…
Hope she doesn’t mind me sharing the above. Or the following, in all her smudged charcoal glory…
Thanks Sharon. And thanks Harlem Meer.
